Harp session in Oxford

Lots of Harps in a Pub! The harp session happens about once a month for harpers to meet up, play together and share music; newcomers are welcome. It takes place on the first Monday of the month, 8pm for 8.30pm start at The James Street Tavern.

Bring any tunes you want to play and check the tunes page for the score and key of favourite harp tunes. All abilities are welcome. The events are hosted by Half Moon Harps, the group that sprang out of the sessions originally based in the Half Moon pub.

Parking is available very close nearby (bring change), as is the Oxford tube stop in St. Clements. The train station is 15-20 mins walk or short taxi ride.

If you are interested to come along then contact Steph: there is an email list that organises the meets and she will put you in touch. Please check in advance before travelling!

What is a session?

A session in an informal gathering of musicians to enjoy playing together. For folk or traditional musicians they are brilliant - an ideal way to swap or learn new tunes, have a drink and a chat and get in a lot of playing - hurrah!

Playing is normally done by ear, anyone can join in with any tune. There is no set list of tunes but there are likely to be some common tunes that most people join in with.

If you don't know a tune then you can try and learn it or play something against it that works (like adding chords beneath). The only rule is don't drown out the tune! Click here for a list of common tunes we play.
