Frequently asked questions

How much are lessons?
Each tutor sets their own fees; please contact the relevant tutor for more information.

Where are lessons held?
Each tutor arranges their lessons individually. Please contact the relevant tutor for more information.

Which instrument is right for me?
If you have never played an instrument before, but are interested in learning to play folk music, you could try visiting The Music Room (by the Jam Factory, near Oxford railway station) to try out a number of instruments. You can also contact tutors for recommendations.

Do I need to buy my own instrument?
Unless your tutor is able to lend you an instrument (please contact tutors individually to find out), it will be necessary to have your own instrument.

Which playing style should I learn?
Folk music encompasses a huge variety of sounds, and folk musicians' playing styles are often just as individual as the songs and tunes themselves. Perhaps the best way to decide how you want to play is to decide what sort of sound you want to make - you can contact individual tutors for recommendations of recordings to listen to, to help you make up your mind.

Where can I play music outside of lessons?
Oxford Folk Tutors run a number of group events, sessions and workshops to help you gain experience playing folk music in a friendly and supportive atmosphere. Please check our 'special events' page for details of what's coming up! To find sessions, concerts and festivals near you, you can also try looking in Shire Folk, a free magazine available across the Thames Valley area, or you can contact info@oxfordfolktutors.co.uk for events happening in Oxford.
