Starting in primary school Bill worked his way through the grades on cello then gave it all up on discovering traditional music at the tender age of 17. Guitar followed for a while, and then some 25 years ago the 5-string banjo beckoned. Bill studied bluegrass and melodic style from the few American books then available. His musical training stood him in good stead and very soon he was teaching others.
Nowadays he particularly enjoys teaching absolute beginners many of whom go on to do his advanced lessons. The reading of music is not required for learning the 5-string banjo, only the ability to count to eight! He can also teach tenor banjo. Bill plays banjo in the duo Nine Mile Ride and is a member of the ceilidh band Tarrantella.
More recently Bill took up the melodeon and for the past six years has been teaching English style up to advanced level. You will find Bill a very patient and understanding teacher as his many previous and present pupils will testify.
